DVLA Registration for Imported Vehicles: Practical Checklist

Clearing at Tema or Takoradi is only half the journey—you still need a Ghana registration from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA).

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) is Ghana's statutory body for vehicle registration and licensing. For an imported unit, DVLA needs proof that Customs has released the vehicle and that the car meets inspection rules. Always verify current fees and forms on dvla.gov.gh or through DVLA's online services before you queue—processes evolve.

1. Customs paperwork stays central

DVLA expects original customs entry documents that tie the chassis/VIN to the shipment you cleared. Photocopies without traceability back to the ICUMS/CCVR trail invite delays. Keep the full packet your clearing agent handed over after payment—you will reconcile VIN, engine number, and owner details against what you submit for registration.

2. Private Vehicle Testing Station (PVTS)

Imported vehicles typically undergo inspection at a designated Private Vehicle Testing Station (PVTS) before registration. The inspection report confirms roadworthiness items DVLA relies on. Schedule early if you are coordinating transport from the port to Accra or another hub—some delays are logistics, not bureaucracy.

3. Identity and representation

DVLA publicly emphasizes Ghana Cardfor identification in line with national ID policy. If someone else handles registration for you, use a formal authorization path (power of attorney or authorization letter) plus valid ID for the representative—requirements are listed under DVLA's published service guidelines.

4. Fees tie to vehicle attributes

Registration charges scale with attributes such as engine cubic capacity or tonnage class. That is why the same model year Corolla and Camry can produce different invoices at DVLA even when customs duty was calculated differently at the port. Ask for the fee schedule in force on the day you pay.

5. What you walk away with

Successful completion yields Ghana plates, a Vehicle Registration Certificate (VRC), and related credentials DVLA issues for lawful road use. Digital channels may capture biometrics and vehicle data—follow the route DVLA documents for your registration class (manual vs online journey).
